Necromancer's United R&D
Necromancer's United is an R&D funded by Arts Council Wales to make innovative and exciting game theatre for and inspired by young people, delivered by a diverse creative team: me, the brilliant dramaturg, Jeremy Linnell, our amazing outreach officer Liam Wallace and a fantastic film maker, Hugo Dupin. With the help of the National Theatre Wales I ran a series of workshops creating game theatre with young people. I was impressed by how poignant their pieces were. A story about zombies was an accurate depiction of the anti-vax movement. I discovered betrayal within one’s team sparked excitement in all groups I worked with. “It was really fun to play! I didn’t trust anyone, but in a good way!” The game mechanic most popular focuses on power dynamics in groups where everybody wants their team to do well, but personally wants to contribute the least. This conflict creates great narrative tension. It also shows parallels to how we have dealt with the pandemic: We want everybody else to stick to the rules, but I’m allowed exceptions when seeing loved ones, traveling, having parties. While I don't want the story to be about the pandemic, having the game structure mirror those social dynamics will make this piece particularly poignant in a world still dealing with Covid19. With the funding for the R&D from Arts Council Wales, we wrote a script that not only supports this game mechanic, but elevates it. We then successfully tested this prototype piece of game theatre across several game tests with young people in from all over Wales. Set in a necromancer's dungeon, the audience are hired cultists in training. Their aim: work their way up through the ranks to become the next High Necromancer.
Strike Limited!
In the third of Volcano's The Shape of Things to Come performance series, cheery Sales Manager Sara Hartel will guide you (as part of the newly recruited workforce) through your induction training and try to keep you in line, maximise your team’s productivity, and generate lots of points for our shareholders! Welcome to the world of game theatre, where the audience are the contestants. But the tasks are becoming more and more absurd and the pressure to hit your targets may start to get to you. Co-operate for mutual benefit and stand up to management or choose to betray your fellow players in a bid to advance your own interests at the expense of theirs.
The Giant Who Never Slept
The Giant Who Never Slept was an immersive outdoor experience for the whole family touring across parks of Birdgend. Tanio teamed up with Flossy and Boo to create this amazing mix of crafting, treasure hunting and story telling. My character, Ash Puddlefoot, told a tale of two gingerbread men breaking into the Big Biscuit Factory to steal back their secret family recipe so they can bake a baby.

A Hero's Work
A Hero's Work is an alternative reality game that I developed for Cultural Cwtsh. In a series of videos, I explain the notion of gamifying your life. How can you transform your everyday work routine into a series of quests that earn you experience points and let you rise through different levels. Why? Because gamifying our life makes it more fun and more rewarding. Here is the link: https://culturalcwtsh.wales/heros-work
